Get to know India's new Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), Lt. General Chauhan

  Lieutenant General Anil Chauhan (retired) was named the next Chief of Defence Staff on Wednesday, September 28. (CDS). This is the first time the position has been filled by a retired officer.

  The development came nine months after the death of India's first CDS General, Bipin Rawat, in a helicopter mishap in Tamil Nadu.

  Lieutenant General Chauhan will step down as Eastern Command Chief in May 2021. Chauhan continues to contribute to national security and strategic issues after leaving office.

  Chauhan, who was born on May 18, 1961, was commissioned into the Indian Army's 11 Gorkha Rifles in 1981. He attended both the National Defence Academy in Khadakwasla and the Indian Military Academy in Dehradun.

  In an almost 40-year career, Chauhan has held various key positions and has vast expertise in counter-insurgency operations in Jammu & Kashmir and northeast India.

  As the Northern Command's major general, Chauhan led an Infantry Division in the vital Baramulla region.

  He led the corps in the northeast as a Lieutenant General before becoming the general officer commanding-in-chief of the Eastern Command in September 2019, a position he maintained until his retirement from the military in May 2021.

  In addition to this, he held various staff roles, including the directorate general of military operations.

  He was also on the United Nations Mission in Angola.

  For his great service, Lt General Chauhan was honoured with the Param Vishisht Seva Medal, the Uttam Yudh Seva Medal, the Ati Vishisht Seva Medal, the Sena Medal, and the Vishisht Seva Medal.

  In addition to providing unbiased counsel to the highest leadership, the CDS serves as the permanent chairman of the Chief of Staff Committee and is the defence minister's chief military advisor.
